Nicky Hetherington

Home Grown

What are the ingredients?

Prejudice and fears?

Difference?

Loyalty?

Poison in their ears?

Religion and adventure?

a cause worth fighting for?

a sense of worth

and meaning?

desire for something more?

We process them and package them

then send them on their way,

blame them

revile them

and plan to make them pay.

Who are the home grown terrorists?

The scared and dispossessed?

Misguided

and derided,

believing they are blessed.

No Rainbow

There is no rainbow in Syria

though it rains bullets

and missiles,

though it rains blood:

of the innocent,

of the guilty.

Though it rains tears

of the grieving,

there is no rainbow:

no realisation

of overzealous destruction.

No promise

of a better future.

No promise

of any future.

Just poisonous rain

in a parched land.
