Home Grown

What are the ingredients?
Prejudice and fears?
Difference?
Loyalty?
Poison in their ears?

Religion and adventure?
a cause worth fighting for?
a sense of worth
and meaning?
desire for something more?

We process them and package them
then send them on their way,
blame them
revile them
and plan to make them pay.

Who are the home grown terrorists?
The scared and dispossessed?
Misguided

and derided,
believing they are blessed.

No Rainbow

There is no rainbow in Syria
though it rains bullets
and missiles,
though it rains blood:
of the innocent,
of the guilty.
Though it rains tears
of the grieving,
there is no rainbow:
no realisation
of overzealous destruction.
No promise
of a better future.
No promise
of any future.
Just poisonous rain
in a parched land.

Nicky Hetherington was placed 2nd in Writing Magazine‘s Haiku competition in 2017 and was the poetry prize winner for Oriel Davies Open Writing Competition for 2017 as well.
