Steve Thorpe

Hitler’s in the Fridge

Hitler’s in the fridge somewhere
Bits of him you’ll see
Kept so cold since Forty-Five
They want his family tree.

The DNA that he contains
Will keep us full of fear
But provide those better strains
The modern state holds dear.

It wasn’t just the Jews he killed
Nor just the gypsies either;
One million homosexuals
And hardly a survivor.

The governments we have today
Would love to know just how
He hypnotised a nation
They would surely use that now.

‘I vow to thee my country’
Seems a message from the past
Its potency is fading
We must defrost Adolf fast!

Get him in that test tube
Let us clone his DNA
So people from all nations
Think they see a brand new day.

This ranting, raving lunatic
Will get a second chance
To spew out all his vitriol
In Germany and France.

To woo the British Public
And the great US of A.
But people wouldn’t fall for that
Again, I hear you say.

Mein Kampf is not too out of touch
It really rings a bell
The swastikas are back now
And we’re on the road to hell.

Perhaps we don’t need tyrants
To tell us what to do;
We all can see the internet
Where every word is true.

And so we all surrender
Every democratic right
Society, democracy ~
They’re fading out of sight.

Best leave poor Adolf where he is
The time has not yet come
To open up his freezer bag
But sands of time will run.

Hitler’s in that fridge somewhere
Beside the frozen peas
Buried under chicken breasts
At minus ten degrees.

Born on the South Coast, Steve Thorpe was a professional musician for a number of years and has always enjoyed expressing himself creatively through music, art and the written word. His work is inspired by his social and political observations. It has also been deeply affected by his experiences as someone with a lifelong diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. This has given him the ability to view life with authenticity, compassion and humour. His work has appeared in an anthology compiled and edited by Alan Morrison called The Hats We Wear/ Blank Versing the Past (Waterloo Press/NHS Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust, 2009).
